In the small community of Portal, you will find the Portal Store and Cafe, Myrtle Kraft Library, Post Office, Walker Family Medical Clinic and Portal Rescue, all within walking distance of each other. The Portal Cafe serves breakfast items as well as burgers, sandwiches and Mexican dishes, while the store offers basic grocery essentials. Wifi is available at the library. You can check each facility for their hours of operation.
It is advisable to fill your tank at Lordsburg (coming from the east), San Simon (coming from the west) or at the Road Forks 24-hour gas station(exit 5) on I-10 or in Douglas (coming from the south). There are also 24-hour gas pumps at the Valley Mercantile in Animas, New Mexico which is 25 miles from Portal.
Sky Island Grocery and Grill and the Portal Café both have a small selection of groceries and other goods for sale. The nearest major grocery stores are in Douglas, AZ, Willcox, AZ and Lordsburg, NM.
The Coronado National Forest is just 7 miles from Quailway Cottage and has many miles of trails. Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center to pick up a trail map and to get tips on recent wildlife sightings and trail conditions. The Visitor Center is staffed by members of the Friends of Cave Creek.
There are several nice local places that offer both dine-in and take-out.
Portal and Rodeo feature several unique museums.
located at the intersection of Route 80 and Portal Road, has a large gift shop and one of the best rattlesnake displays in the Southwest.
located in a former church in Rodeo, offers an excellent selection of handcrafted items and original artwork.
The American Museum of Natural History operates its famous Southwestern Research Station in the canyon about 4 miles from the ranger station. Scientists come from all over the world to study the area’s unique reptiles, amphibians, insects, plants, mammals, and birds. Currently closed but scheduled to reopen in March 2022.
Away from the city lights, the beautiful southeastern Arizona sky is a vista of colors in the daylight and a canopy of stars on a clear night. Whether simple stargazing to dazing meteorite showers the night sky is unbeatable. For astronomers, our latitude and longitude are N 31˚ 52' 44" W 109˚ 03' 34".

The Chiricahua mountains were once the home of the Apaches. You can visit the Geronimo Monument a short 10 miles south of the Quailway Cottage on Highway 80. Other sites of historical significance within 2 hours of Portal include the famous lawman’s John Slaughter Ranch, Tombstone, Cochise Strong Hold in the Coronado Mountains, Fort Bowie and the grave site of gun fighter, Johnny Ringo.
Cochise County has many great day road trips. Take a drive to Douglas and have lunch at the haunted Gadsden Motel, watch a reenactment of the gunfight at OK Corral in Tombstone or take a tour of Queens Mine in Bisbee. There is always plenty to do and see.
